Who I Am

My name is Laura Buttrick, and I am a Computer Games Production student at the University of Lincoln, UK. I am currently the student representative for the Level One Computer Games Production course.

What I Do

First and foremost, I am a student. Nothing particularly glamourous, but certainly something life changing. I took the normal route all the way up to the end of Sixth Form, muddled my way through an eye opening first year at Exeter University, and finally landed back on my feet in Lincoln.

Second, I am a gamer. An unapologetically hedonistic nature has led to me sinking hundreds of hours into playing all manner of games, purely because I enjoy them. In more recent years, however, the “student” element has come into play and games are not only about enjoyment any more. Combining my hobby with my studies might seem like an amateur error, but I see it more as putting fun into the work that I do, not putting work into my fun.

Third, I write. I am a sci fi fantasy nerd but lucky for the general public, I’ve had a generic case of writer’s block for a good five years. So instead, I channel my writing energy into Press Triangle, within a reasonably well supported framework of new game releases and conferences to draw inspiration from. What I am not, however, is a journalist. I rarely review new games straight off the bat, for several reasons. I do not have the funding or the time to play and review every single new AAA release, nor do I have access to prerelease copies or anything else that would make my reviews competitive in terms of speed and information. So instead, if I find a game that evokes a particularly strong response (be it positive or negative) I write about it. It might be reasonably new, it might be from the 1990s. I don’t aim to maintain an up to the minute flow of new content, because that’s not what Press Triangle is about.

Where I Am

I’m based in the UK, currently in Lincoln, but I move frequently. In the next few years I hope to travel all over the world.
